Power of Attorney (POA)

The Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form — REG 262 is a multi-purpose form used to facilitate transfer of ownership of a California vehicle. The Power of Attorney (POA) section grants authorization to sign and complete common transfer documents. The following is a guide to the correct use of the REG 262 POA.

Documents that can be signed by POA

Documents that cannot be signed by POA

Signatures

If there are co-owners on the title, one or both must sign depending on how the names are joined on the title:

Signatures may include less or more than the individual’s printed name provided it is clear that the two names belong to the same person.

Signatures that differ from the printed name and appear to be two different people require a name statement, section F of the Statement of Facts (REG 256).

When a company is assigned power of attorney, the signature must include the
company name, countersigned by an authorized agent of the company.

The endorsement for a company requires a countersignature of an authorized agent — never by power of attorney.

Lessor(s) signature is required; Lessee(s) signature is optional.

The signature for a trust must contain both the name of the trust and the
countersignature of at least one trustee.
